SMLI COMMUNITY COMPOST PROJECT
Project type
Community Compost Facility
Date
Est. October 2020
Location
Science Museum of Long Island
During my term as Executive Director at the Science Museum of Long Island, we lainched a Community Compost in October 2020. It was the area’s first composting demonstration facility dedicated to reducing food waste and building healthy soils. In order to participate, families would pay an initial fee and agree to help maintain the compost in exchange for being able to drop off their food scraps at the facility. To date, we have rescued over 40,000 pounds or 20 tons of kitchen scraps (that’s the weight of 12 Subaru Foresters!) from plastic bags, gas-guzzling garbage trucks, incinerators and landfills.
The Compost center was also used for educational purposes, in teaching children, adults and other community leaders both the benifits and various methods for composting your food scraps.
